Sales Tax FAQs

Does TruBid collect sales tax on forage purchases?

Unless a buyer submits a TruBid a sales tax exemption form, we are required by law to collect sales tax from the buyer and remit to the appropriate state any sales tax collected.  An exception to this would be if a state has no sales tax.

Is horse hay considered taxable?

In most states forages are not taxed if it's being used for agricultural livestock.  However, when it comes to purchasing forages for horses, each state has its own rules.  To learn what the sales tax requirements are in a particular state see the last question on this page.

If I purchase a forage outside of my state, which state's sales tax rules apply?

The state where the buyer takes possession of their purchase is the state whose sales tax regulations will apply.  For example, if you purchase a forage in another state and pick it up yourself, your purchase would be taxed according to the tax regulations of the seller's state.  On the other hand, if you purchased a forage in another state and had the seller, or a third-party hauler deliver it to you, it would be taxed according to the tax regulations of your state.

Just a reminder, in order to be exempt from sales tax, you must submit a sales tax exemption form for ANY state you plan to pick up your purchase.
